Theater Historian Oscar Brockett Dies at 87

Renowned theater historian Oscar Brockett died on Sunday, November 7 at a hospital in Austin, Texas after suffering a stroke the previous day, according to published reports.

Brockett is well known for his 1968 book, History of the Theatre, which has since gone into ten editions, and been translated into dozens of languages. He has contributed to numerous other books, including The Essential Theatre, Making the Scene: A History of Stage Design and Technology in Europe and the United States, and Plays for the Theatre, among others. He was a longtime professor at the University of College, Austin, and retired in 2006.

He is survived by his daughter, Francesca Brockett. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to the Oscar G. Brockett Theatre Endowment, Department of Theatre and Dance, University of Texas at Austin, 1 University Station-D3900, Austin, TX 78712-0362.
