The Sound of Music

About the Show

Maria is a sweet young postulate whose love of freedom makes it painfully obvious to her superiors that she is not suited for religious life. Eventually, she is dispatched from her abbey to assume the role of governess to Captain von Trapp’s seven motherless children. The children do everything in their power to make Maria miserable, but unlike previous governesses, Maria befriends the children and engages them through their mutual love of music. Soon, even the strict Captain begins to admire Maria and the two fall in love and are married. Unfortunately, when the Nazis invade Austria, the entire family is forced to flee over the Alps to escape.

The Sound Of Music originally premiered on Broadway in 1959 and went on to win six Tony Awards, including the coveted award for Best Musical. Richard Rodgers wrote the music with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. The dialogue, written by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, was suggested by the autobiography The Trapp Family Singers by Maria Augusta Trapp. The subsequent Hollywood film version, released in 1965, starred Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer and won five Oscars, including Best Picture. The show is directed by Susan Weingarten, with musical direction by Doug Lewis.
