Village Theatre opens its 2004-2005 Mainstage season with Rodgers and Hammerstein’s groundbreaking musical classic, South Pacific, directed and choreographed by Village Theatre Artistic Director Steve Tomkins. Winner of nine Tony Awards, the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical, South Pacific is the only major Rodgers and Hammerstein musical that has not had a Broadway revival.
With a score that includes some of the most memorable songs ever written for the stage, and James Michener’s Pulitzer Prizewinning novel Tales of the South Pacific as the basis, Rodgers and Hammerstein stunned Broadway at its 1949 debut. Before the vivid backdrop of a South Seas paradise, the love of plantation owner Emile de Becque for the spirited American Nellie Forbush plays out against some of Hammerstein’s most provocative drama and the realities of a world at war.
