Giuseppe Verdi’s thrilling Rigoletto pits power against innocence, beauty against ugliness. In his first work as Director of The Royal Opera, Oliver Mears sets this production in a pitiless world of luxurious decadence, corruption and social decay, bringing Verdi’s masterpiece into the modern world. This special anniversary screening (filmed in September 2021) is conducted by Sir Antonio Pappano and celebrates 171 years since its premiere in 1851.

Carols Alvarez performs the title role of the jester Rigoletto alongside Lisette Oropesa as Gilda and Liparit Avetisyan as the Duke of Mantua. Rigoletto is sung in Italian with English subtitles. This screening will have a runtime of approximately 2 hours 45 minutes, including one intermission.
