About This Show

The Keegan Theatre is the first Washington area resident professional company to mount Warren Leight’s 1999 Tony award winning play, Side Man. Leslie A. Kobylinski directs.

The play is a tender memory tale, told from the standpoint of the son of a side man, a jazz trumpet player. The son is moving on, moving away — but not without reflecting deeply on the realm his parents and their friends occupy. The action takes place during an era when opportunities for those men and women who made their livelihood in this uniquely American form of music were drying up due to what crowned on the horizon, the birth of the ever-changing world of popular music, rock-and-roll and beyond. The story deftly weaves the lives of people with ties to one sideman’s family, the passion that drove them, the passion that hemmed them, and the passion that ultimately shaped each of their destinies.
