Longacre Lea presents Man With Bags by Eugene Ionesco.
The Man of the title becomes conscious on a pier and is compelled onto his journey by four bickering painters and a mysterious boatman. He encounters dead members of his family and a bizarre array of characters — including a brooding, singing Roman emperor and a homicidal doctor — on his quest for his missing third suitcase and his family name. The landscape, his cultural missteps and the threat of war slow him down and confuse his mission. And why is he dragged into court for not eating his vegetables? For fans of Ionesco this is a chance to see a piece that is rarely produced. Lewis Carroll, Terry Gilliam and even Carl Jung enthusiasts will find much to enjoy in the surreal melancholy, dream imagery and non-traditional comedy of this most autobiographical of Ionesco’s plays.
