Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris

About the Show

Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris transforms Brel’s astonishing musical compositions into a theatrical experience that has delighted audiences for nearly four decades. This revue of the art of Belgian songwriter Jacques Brel features 27 English versions of his beloved songs. Brel’s music is very much of the French tradition of singing that will be more familiar to English-speaking audiences through the songs of Edith Piaf. His songs are characterized by exuberance for life…yet they are often tempered by an edge of bitterness and longing for a youthful innocence.

Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris is a diverse blend of ballads, tangos, boleros, rock, and classics. With raw human emotion, each piece tells a story, examining themes of love, war, adventure, broken dreams, growing old, and death…but never forgetting that life, with all its complexities, shows us much humor. Jim Petosa directs.
