About This Show

It’s lower Manhattan, 1905, and opportunities are scarce for ‘colored’ women. Esther Mills, a seamstress specializing in intimate apparel, leads a full–if not exactly exciting– life and still hopes to find marriage, intimacy, and love with the man of her dreams. When she begins a correspondence with George Armstrong, a laborer on the Panama Canal and an acquaintance of a distant cousin, his letters quickly inspire Esther to imagine a new life for herself–a life of passion and possibilities. But when George finally arrives in New York, Esther must ask herself: is this distant, brooding man the same person who penned those romantic thoughts?

Center Stage, in association with South Coast Repertory, presents the world premiere of Intimate Apparel, by Lynn Nottage. Kate Whoriskey directs.
