About This Show

First Look is a series of readings and play development workshops designed with a two-fold mission — to give playwrights a laboratory for developing or refining their work and/or to expose audiences to works that stretch the boundaries of content, style, or technique. This First Look: Special Edition features four writers — all in their 20s and 30s — whose plays represent a more youthful aesthetic than traditional CenterStage mainstage fare:

SCHEDULE

MONDAY, MARCH 21st, 8pm

Help Wanted (A Personal Search for Meaningful Employment at the Start of the 21st Century)
This solo play written and performed by Josh Lefkowitz launches from the safe haven of college into the vast-scary-thrilling world at large. He struggles to make sense of it all amidst a churning tangle of video games, checkout lines, table-waiting, and army surplus equipment; ultimately forcing us to concede that, yes, it is possible to find passion in a parking garage.

WEDNESDAY & THURSDAY, MARCH 23 & 24, 8:30pm

Americamisfit by Dan Dietz
Of Mice and Men meets Natural Born Killers meets your high school American History class taught by a Jerry Lee Lewis look-alike: this is Americamisfit. Is your head spinning yet? Good. Austin playwright Dan Dietz dishes out a democratic smackdown the likes of which history textbooks have never seen. Step aside, Founding Fathers. Make way for the rockabilly underbelly of America to frazzle your parchment, shake your quills, and blow your wigs.
