William Shakespeare’s famous dream play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, is set in a contemporary nightclub, Soulstice, owned by Oberon and tended by his most trusted ally, Puck. Our young lovers are caught up in the seedy nightlife and become toys for Puck and her band of regular club-goers. Bottom is transformed from bouncer into raver, out of place in this posh space.
Behind the DJ’s decks, underneath the belly of the bar, nestled into chaise lounges and fluffy sofas, packed onto a 4 x 4 platform, there arises a dream world that ignites all the senses. Within the bass booms, the roar of the crowd, the sweaty bodies swaying together in one small room, we can sense the ecstatic energy in every melodic shift, every thump of the heart, every beat the DJ lays down, and love in all its magical forms fills the night, no restrictions, no boundaries, no sense of time. The night is wild with confusion, senses are overwhelmed, but when it’s over and we step back into the early morning sunlight, we wonder, was last night real? Or all a dream? Ty Hallmark directs.
