About the Show

Using Billy Joel’s songs and her choreography performed by a virtuosic cast of dancers, Twyla Tharp envisioned the story of a group of friends: Brenda, Eddie, Anthony, Judy and James- all living through tumultuous times from 1967-1987. She constructed the beginnings of the piece with her company of dancers in a small New York studio. Although Billy Joel had declined many previous offers to "theatricize" his songs, he was immediately persuaded once he saw how Tharp could tell a story through dance. Based on her treatment of his musical narrative, Movin’ Out began its journey toward Broadway.
