“this body stays” began as a response to the harrowing history of the “comfort women”—Korean women and girls forced into military sexual slavery by the Japanese army during World War II—and was first presented at the MainStage Theatre in 2019. Since then, it has grown into a work in progress: a living, evolving exploration of memory, belonging, and the quiet strength that emerges when women lift one another.
In this latest iteration, the origins of the piece remain an undercurrent, but the piece now moves more abstractly, layering subtle gestures, fractured motifs, and shifting textures of space and light. I hope to continue expanding these layers in the years to come—each new revision deepening our understanding of displacement and sisterhood, drawing us closer to the intangible pulse of “home.”
As a Korean immigrant who has spent her life between cultures, the longing for a sense of home is deeply personal—and yet profoundly universal. This work is an offering to the community: a space to reflect, remember, and connect through movement. I invite you to witness this shared journey and be part of the ongoing conversation it hopes to inspire.
