About the Show

Enjoy a great evening of jazz music in the beautiful Elks’ Crystal Hall on the 3rd floor of the Performing Arts Center.

Join us for the next concert in our series of jazz music exploration – the Latin Influence. The music of Latin America has long been influential across the world. Samba music is the music of Mardi Gras in Rio de Janeiro. It even extends to a similar beat for Mardi Gras music in New Orleans. Bossa Nova became a world-wide phenomenon in the 1960’s and became a favorite style for many jazz players, most notably Stan Getz. Even singers such as Frank Sinatra recorded many tunes with a Bossa Nova beat. Astud Gilberto had a huge hit with “The Girl From Ipanema,” recorded with Stan Getz. It was the song of the year at the Grammys in 1965.
Special guest Abel Valentino will join Mike Vax and musicians from around Arizona that will present this evening that will include not only the music, but historical facts and anecdotes about the music and the musicians who have performed America’s True Art Form for over 100 years.
Fascinated by the complex and mysterious religious nature of Afro-Cuban music. A self-taught percussionist, Abel began his professional career at 14 years old with the Pete Robles orchestra.
