About the Show

New Freedom Theatre’s Repertory Theatre’s production of Emergence-See! was such a critical hit that it is being brought back by popular demand for a limited engagement.

Emergence-See! is written and performed by Daniel Beaty and directed by Walter Dallas. The year is 2006 and a slave ship has risen ghost-like out of the Hudson River in front of the Statue of Liberty sending New Yorkers into a whirlwind of emotion and expectation. This occurs on the same day as a poetry slam and by the time Mr. Beaty is finished he has touched on reparations, ethnic identity, ugly babies and dozens of other topics. Beaty, a charismatic and talented actor, portrays 40 characters ranging from an 11 year old girl to a 400 year old African Chieftain.

“What a comeback! After almost two years, Freedom Repertory Theatre reopened with an electrifying solo show starring Daniel Beaty, the 2004 Grand Slam Champion of New York’s Nuyorican Poets Cafe, and he uses a poetry slam at the cafe as part of the architecture of the show. You couldn’t find a funnier, more theatrical show…” — Philadelphia Inquirer

“By the end, I was on my feet shouting like someone in church, I was so moved.” — Ruby Dee
