About the Show

Based on the novel by Jean Rhys (which was named an “All TIME Best Novel” by TIME Magazine), Wide Sargasso Sea is a prequel to Charlotte Brontë’s famous 1847 novel, Jane Eyre. The story is set on the island of Jamaica in 1844, amidst the political upheaval brought about by slavery’s abolition. The work is considered both a feminist masterpiece, and insightful in terms of its exploration of the European attitude toward race.

Two adaptations, one an Anglo-Australian production directed by John Duigan (1993), and another from Trinidad’s Banyan Productions, directed by Michael Gilkes (1990), will be presented. Discussion follows.
