Trachiniae

Deianeira awaits her husband, the legendary Herakles who is away on war campaigns. While contemplating the events that have shaped her life, she receives news that he is on his way home. Her measured response quickly becomes charged when she hears that he has chosen a new bride – one of the captive slaves just arrived at her doorstep. In the misguided effort to regain his affection for herself, Deianeira brings about his agonized downfall and her own.
