The Wreckers

Dame Ethel Smyth was a friend of Brahms, Clara Schumann, Edvard Grieg, Benjamin Britten, and William Walton. The Wreckers, premiered in 1906 by Sir Thomas Beecham, is the English opera that would pave the way to Peter Grimes. Almost impressionistic in its sound, The Wreckers explores the power of love in a world of evil. After its triumphant Leipzig premiere, The London Times declared Smyth’s work to be “one of the very few modern operas which must count among the great things in art.”
