New York’s ultimate theater for kids and families holds its annual New Victory Theater Family Benefit to raise funds for the New Victory Theater Education Program and the New Vic/New 42 Youth Corps. The benefit is made up of one performance, and then a variety of food and kids activites featuring New Vic New York Artists. The performance at this year’s benefit is Circus Oz: The Laughing at Gravity Tour. Brashly turning circus arts on its multi-colored head, Circus Oz makes the ordinary extraordinary by giving traditional circus acts a twisted, rock-infused makeover. Fueled by the rhythms of an onstage band, a popcorn vendor finds herself twisted in knots (literally); an accordion player in a bolero jacket thwarts off the oncoming advances of a BMX stunt biker; an orchestra’s conductor lets his flight-prone, upright bass get the best of him; and seven pole climbers race up and rocket down a 40-foot tower of terror. The 14-member group sets the stage ablaze with an arsenal of fiery juggling pins, blazing hula-hoops, flaming drumsticks and more in the hottest finale to ever hit 42nd Street.
