Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale

Igor Stravinsky’s Faustian tale pits a deserted soldier against the devil himself in a battle for love, art, and the soldier’s soul. Written while exiled in Switzerland during World War I, L’Histoire du Soldat finds Stravinsky moving away from his Russian traditionalism to embrace the new world of jazz—resulting in an economical theater work that merges acting, dancing, and a septet of seemingly disparate instruments.
