About This Show

“Rogers’ unique creative process involves a personal notation system,
which the dancers refer to as ‘RADIFORDOGRAPHY,’ followed
by exploratory sessions with dancers.” — Ann Haskins, Pointe Magazine

“Ambitious and rewarding…” — Donald Hutera, London Times

Raiford Rogers Modern Ballet offers New York premieres of three original works. The lead premiere, Transcription, set to Busoni’s piano transcription of Bach’s Chaconne in D minor, is a new multi-media dance piece that joins music, movement, and digital 24p video. Shot from a car window, the objective of the piece is to re-create the sensation of a moving vehicle through the myriad of ethnically diverse neighborhoods that form the fabric of Los Angeles. The idea is that the city’s identity, or sense of place, is actually achieved by “travel” and “arrival” at a destination.

The other works in the program include Concertante set to Frank Martin’s 1944 Petite Symphonie Concertante, and Sonata No. 2 set to Martinu’s Sonata No. 2 for Cello and Piano.
