About This Show

In ancient Greece, devotees of Dionysus would gather under the full moon to engage in transcendent rituals of music, dance, eroticism, and intoxication under the spiritual guidance of the mythic musician and proto-Christ, Orpheus. The goal of these so-called Orphic Cults was to make contact with the divine spirit through these rites and, in doing so, build a community based on brotherly love and harmony. With time, these cults became decadent and exploitative, more about becoming inebriated and enriching an elite priesthood than enlightenment. Orpheus features book, music, and lyrics by Michael Levine.
