About This Show

Magic, martial arts, myth, and revolutionary history combine in the world premiere of composer/saxophonist Fred Ho’s “sheroic” fantasy-action opera. Warrior Sisters: The New Adventures of African and Asian Womyn Warriors spans one century and three continents as it recounts the incredible odyssey of three legendary womyn warriors who come together to free modern-day African-American activist Assata Shakur. Directed by Mira Kingsley, it fuses the high-octane adventure of Chinese opera, West African praise songs and folklore, and socialist-realist agit-prop to celebrate new gender roles and the liberation from patriarchal and imperialist oppression.

There is a post-performance discussion following the Thursday show.
