UNman is an all-improvised one-man comedy. Every show is completely different. The project began as creator and performer Scott Prendergast’s attempt to improvise an entire show by himself. The challenge is to make the audience forget that they are watching just one performer. Each show begins with an improvised monologue during which information is surreptitiously drawn from the audience. The show then develops into a soap-opera based on several audience members’ lives. The music for the show is provided by a CD player which sits onstage and is run by the performer: audience members pick numbers at random which correspond to different atmospheric musical selections such as romantic, frightening, or suspense. The show involves interactive elements such as conversations with audience members in “phone calls”, and/or bringing audience members onstage to act as therapists or cab drivers.
