Un-Lonely Planet

Theater for the New City presents the world premiere of Un-Lonely Planet, a new play by Susan Josephs, directed by Rob DeRosa and produced by Krista Kujat. The play tells a darkly comic story about two American couples on the fringes of society that travel to a country on the fringes of the world.

These couples, all professed travel addicts, survive the journey to the allegedly sole remaining country in Asia that’s untouched by rampant tourism. They suffer troubled relationships but have stayed together so they can travel together. On the street, they meet Mr. K and his associate Lefty, self-employed travel guides with major aspirations to merit mention in the greatest travel book ever written. Mr. K makes special offers to lead them to the Temple of Hidden Truths and the Temple on Amazing Cliffs. These particular temples do not bode well for the future of these misguided couples. As for Mr. K and Lefty, they get what they want but not really.

Un-Lonely Planet poses questions about globalization, tourism in developing countries, and the quest to feel authentic and individual in a world overrun by American popular culture. At the same time, this is a play about escapism gone awry; about people who desperately want to connect yet cannot face their own fears about being alone.
