About the Show

Brian Friel’s Translations is directed by Julliard faculty member, Richard Feldman. Celebrated Irish playwright Brian Friel looks into the lives of a country schoolmaster, Hugh O’Donnell, and the neighborhood students he teaches, in accordance with British law, in his barnyard “hedge school.” Played out against the backdrop of the British Army’s crusade to replace the Gaelic language across the Irish countryside with English, Friel’s gripping drama begins in the local unrest that’s brewing as British engineers and troops have started a survey to map the countryside for military intelligence and to standardize Gaelic names to the King’s English. This haunting and poetic drama, set in the Ireland of 1833, tells the story of the end of one era and the beginning of another.
