About This Show

By day, they are mild-mannered, early-career playwrights, but for four Equity Approved Showcase weeks in mid-winter, they come together each night (well, every Thursday through Sunday) to fight ennui and their label as “promising.” Their super heroic efforts will be manifest each night in seven plays that range from the esoteric to the sublime to an STD clinic. They are The Mag 7: Louis Cancelmi, Graham Gordy, John Kim, Heather MacDonald, Itamar Moses, Hugh Murtagh, and Deirdre O’Connor.

Now in its 20th season, Naked Angels was started by a collective of restless and ambitious actors, writers, directors, designers reacting to a void in the theater community for new and creative voices. The company took its name from John Tytell’s book, Naked Angels, which referred to Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs and the other Beats as a “generation that wanted to break out of convention and scream.” As a young group, the company felt the same way; it needed a place where, through the medium of theater, it could show the world a different perspective on our times.
