About the Show

The Legend of the Kinnaree is written & directed by Ruben Polendo, and is a collaboration with Theatre Mitu, presented by New York University, Tisch School of the Arts Graduate Acting Program and the Department of Design for Stage and Film.

The myth of the winged maiden, or Kinnaree, exist in many of regions of the world. It always speaks of a chief of king who captures one of these bird maidens. To keep her by his side, he inevitably rips her wings from her and traps her. The play imagines the Kinnaree standing full of power, strength, rage and glory-she speaks for every Kinnaree that has ever been made to dance for her wings. She demands the story that was once hers-where she danced and sang freely-where she loved and was loved without being owned. She asks for the return of her myth-the return of her legend.
