About This Show

The Last Two Jews of Kabul is a two character play based upon a true story as reported in the news services of the discovery after the fall of Kabul in the autumn of 2001 of the last two remaining Jews in a city that was once home to 40,000 Jews. The two alleged remaining Jews were sharing as their living quarters the ruins of a synagogue — but not speaking to each other. This is a comic premise and the play is, indeed, rich in humor. But it is not without serious and dramatic overtones. For in this fictional depiction the two men’s personalities not only are in constant conflict but neither seems to be quite truthful about his identity and his background. And their motivations for staying in Kabul during the last days of the Taliban and the volatile and dangerous transition following the arrival of the Americans and the Northern Alliance are open to dramatic question. At the same time, the play is as an attempt to examine the Israeli-Muslim conflict in microcosm and to point a life affirming way toward a possible resolution. Written by Josh Greenfeld, directed by George Ferencz.
