About This Show

John Guare’s The House of Blue Leaves is arguably his most popular play. It takes place on October 4, 1965 when the Pope is coming to New York to try to end the war in Vietnam. Artie Shaughnessy, a native of Queens, wants to change his life. He dreams of a life in Hollywood as a composer instead of being the Central Park zookeeper that he is. At home his mentally unstable wife, Bananans, has been living in her nightgown for six months. His mistress, Bunny, wants to get married and escape to Bel Air. To add to his troubles, his son Ronnie is AWOL from the army, three nuns show up at his apartment in search of a TV and a movie starlet drops by for a visit. The House of Blue Leaves is a wacky and poignant play that defies theatrical conventions and is truly stunning in its use of language, humor and heartbreak.
