Owen Thompson’s original adaptation of Moliere’s The Doctor in Spite of Himself gets its New York premiere from the Protean Theatre Company. Sganarelle is a drunken woodcutter who is mistaken (by force) to be the finest doctor in the world. As his services are procured to restore the voice of a girl in distress, confusion and comedy ensues. Sganarelle’s prescriptions are baffling, his flirtations are comically deadly, and all the while, his wealth grows at more rapid a pace then his knowledge of medicine.
