About the Show

This is a darkly comic exploration of one woman’s call to art, self-discovery and autonomy. Is Evvie Avery a wife and mother, an independent artist, a sexual beast or a loveless monster? Evvie’s demons are embodied onstage by two hyper-sexual, gluttonous Ancient Greek Lesbians and a veiled Lady In Black. Due to her relentless indecision, Evvie is brought to a tragic, yet beautifully ambiguous end. The piece is inspired by The Awakening by Kate Chopin. Immediately after its publication in 1899, reviewers denounced The Awakening as “unwholesome" due to its sexual openness, themes of liberation and female independence from men. Fine Feathered Friends’ modern spin on the story questions traditional female roles in 2009, just as Kate Chopin did in 1899.
