About This Show

Based on Jason’s legendary trip to Colchis, the heroic episode of the Blue Rocks is depicted from the victim’s point of view, and suggests that Jason’s tragic future derives from his past. Izumi Ashizawa Performance Company presents The Blue Rocks, a fusion of traditional Japanese Noh theatre and Greek tragedy with original music and masks.

In Greek mythology, Jason, the son of Aeson and Alcimede, led the Argonauts in their quest for the Golden Fleece. The Centaur Chiron raised Jason in the countryside of Thessaly after Pelias took the throne of Iolcus in place of Aeson. An oracle had forewarned Pelias to beware of a man wearing one sandal, so he recognized the danger when Jason returned to Iolcus (wearing one sandal) to claim his rightful inheritance. Pelias, seeking to destroy him, told Jason that he would receive the throne, if he should first make an expedition to recover the Golden Fleece from the kingdom of Aia in the extreme east. The hero and his crew encountered a variety of hazards on the journey to Aia.
