About the Show

Sango (Lord of Thunder) is a coming of age Yoruba Dance Drama of the boy king as he attempts to resolve issues of abandonment, revenge, love, lust, and selfishness surrounding the mystery of his lineage; and figure out how to achieve Iwa Pele (good character) in spite of his circumstance. Sango (pronounced Shongo) is the Orisha (a deity of the West African Yoruba Pantheon) of Courage, Truth and intelligence; as well as being the Lord of fire, thunder, lightning, rain and (male) fertility. The drama examines the human condition of this particularly popular Orisha and how it relates to the descendants of the victims of the “Middle Passage.” Of all the Yoruba deities, Sango is the most widely known.
