Precious Underwood is a beautiful teenage debutante growing up in Dallas, Texas. Precious’ path in life seems to be mapped out until Maxine Weinstein and her Jewish family move from New York City into the house next door. The two young girls meet in their high school bathroom, become best friends, and cling to each other as they spiral into the abyss of teenage adolescence. Along this journey we meet an array of eccentric characters including Maxine’s seductive brother, Jack, the Fascist Varsity Cheerleaders, Precious’ possessive boyfriend Cody, her alcoholic Mother, and the flamboyant Drama Boys. With the exception of Maxine and Precious, all the characters are done in voice over giving the production a dramatic theatricality. The play ultimately chronicles Precious’ attempt to create her own identity as she struggles with the traditions and moralities of Southern living.
