About This Show

Mixed Signals examines what forces the connection between ourselves and our opposites. In four unique one-act plays (and four different scenarios), Mixed Signals exposes the light and dark side of the theory that opposites attract, suggesting that perhaps our relationships are determined by something outside ourselves. How do we end up with who we’ve got?

Take Rachel and Isaac in Jason Williamson’s Living Things. Although together for some time, they find their relationship strangely altered by the apparition of a woman, a sketch that Isaac has begun to create. On a lighter level, Rock by Monserrat Mendez gives us a taste of how popular culture, marketing, and conspicuous consumption determine the path of a young couple contemplating the "next step". In Chemosynthesis, also by Jason Williamson, we see how the pressures of the rat race bring an unlikely pair together in an unlikely location.  What happens when someone who plays by the rules befriends someone opposed to structure?  The result is liberating. Dennis Bush’s Below the Belt examines the misfortune of "opposites attract".  In a tight-knit community, it seems unlikely that these relationships were ever meant-to-be.  Couples quickly unravel as betrayal reaches its peak, and what results is unthinkable, tragic, and everyone is accountable. The Misfit Toys Repertory Company is proud to present each of these plays in support of emerging playwrights.  Each of these plays has been carefully selected by a committee of Misfit Toys company members to launch our new works initiative.  We proudly connect our mission to create groundbreaking theatre with this presentation of world-premiere one-act plays.
