About This Show

Midsummer Project is a three session workshop exploration of selected scenes of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Using the techniques of Playback Theater and the work of Augusto Boal, a group of six actors and eleven volunteers has been working to reveal the hidden meanings of Shakespeare’s Masterpiece. Structured around the theme of family, Raised Spirits Theater explores Midsummer Night’s Dream’s most intimate relationships and how they effect performance of the play. This workshop is the first in a series of three that Raised Spirits Theater plans to explore Midsummer. The other two focus on how magic and clown work in the play. Under the direction of director Alexander Carney, Raised Spirits Theater is presenting its findings to an audience in the spirit of experimentation.

Raised Spirits Theater is dedicated to “Classics, by, for, and with ALL sorts of people.”  We make theater with actors of all shapes, colors, sizes, challenges, and orientations.  We cast color blind and we take apart classic literature to suit whatever point we wish to make.  We do this because we believe Shakespeare and his contemporaries wrote their plays for us, the people who watch them —- and we’re committed to making that “seeing” visceral, immediate, and deeply impactful.
