About This Show

Set in a small town in northern Mississippi, this story is told through the wild imagination of a young boy, as he tries to make sense of the world around him without the guidance of a father. His grandmother, after enduring decades of tragedy, tries to hold her failing family together as she enters the twilight of her life. Told in three acts, the audience experiences the zeitgeist of the play – the decline of the black American family fabric. When asked why he took a step away from film to write this whimsical tragedy, Wren shared, “I’ve always been drawn to theater that held a bit of magic in its characters, set design, and way of unraveling the story. Unlike most film, theater isn’t about recreating reality. It’s more than that. It’s the way we wish we could see it coupled with the power of our imagination.”
