About This Show

Joan Miller’s Dance Players will perform at the Miller Theatre for one performance only. The program is listed below:

Go Fer B’roque: This is an ensemble piece featuring seven dancers set to Baroque music. It has three sections “On Your Marks,” “Get Set” and “Go.”

Blue Notes: A surreal pas de deux set to music by Max Roach.

When Pigments Fly: This world premier is a tribute to the late visual and dance enthusiast artist Herbert Gentry.

First Time: Guest choreographer Eleo Pomare contributes to this early romantic duet set to the music of Roberta Flack.

Boots, Backtalk and Beyond: Miller explores avenues of social and political communication using vocal and gesture rhythm past and present. This major work was inspired by events of the past such as the South African slave laborers forbidden to speak, using their bodies, boots and chains as musical instruments to communicate facts and feelings. These historical events are compared with contemporary events such as sound bites, newsletters, raves and rants.
