How Light Is Spent

“I used to go to church. To mosques or synagogues. Anything, all the time. I didn’t want to know where my faith ended, and I began. I realize now–that’s crazy.”

How Light Is Spent tells the story of four people whose lives are shaped by questions of faith and forgiveness, madness and belief. At the center of the play is Amanda, a young woman haunted by a past of intense religious zealotry. Now being treated for schizophrenia, Amanda’s careful, guarded life is disrupted when she meets Ezra, a rabbi losing his faith. Ezra’s tempestuous daughter, Judith, has just left her boyfriend, Peter, whose cancer diagnosis has led him to devout Christianity. As the play unfolds, these characters are bound together ever more tightly by their struggles of conviction, and connections of the past. How Light Is Spent is a moving, lyrical drama that asks: What does it cost to believe?
