Eenie Meanie

Eenie Meanie takes a compelling look at racism in American society as seen through the eyes of a self-described “flesh-colored person.” The play is set in the early 60s in an idyllic white household where the 5-year-old Ms. Willis meets her very first person of color, a piano tuner in her living room who enchanted her. From here, she re-lives the influential moments of her life involving African-Americans as well as examining her own fascination, attraction and empathy for the race, despite her lily-white surroundings.

Accompanying images and music reflect the current events of the passing years — Martin Luther King’s assassination, the bussing conflicts of the seventies, the Rodney King verdict — as Ms. Willis evolves from precocious child to jaded youth, and then from self-obsessed adult to self-empowered woman through the powerful lens of her relationships with and attitude towards people of color. Eenie Meanie is presented as part of the 10th Annual New York International Fringe Festival.
