Decadance Vs. The Firebird

International, all female, hip-hop crew, Decadancetheatre, take on the narrative of Stravinsky’s, The Firebird, in an original dance production featuring eight dancers, an MC and a DJ at the 2004 New York International Fringe Festival. Just as the “mash-up” (a DJ juxtaposing two songs of contrasting genres to create a new beat) phenomenon has fueled the underground DJ scene, Decadance Vs. The Firebird will “mash up” the traditional ballet with an original score and aggressive hip-hop choreography.

A modern take on a classic story, this follows Iva, a young girl in the inner city whose youthful exuberance keeps her blissfully ignorant of the potential dangers around her. One day, in the midst of exploring her surroundings, she meets an unlikely companion who will prove to be an even more unlikely savior – a dazzling creature known only as the Firebird through which Iva can see all things that are possible. As Iva encounters a series of challenges, – evil b-girl antagonists, a shifting chain link fence, confounding forests- she will need the Firebird’s light to find her way out.
