Carl Hancock Rux brings excerpts from his new cabaret opera, with music composed by Deirdre Murray, to Joe’s Pub. Directed by Karin Coonrod, Blackamoor Angel is the story of a mixed race agitprop troupe in Weimar era Berlin, and their performance of a circus opera based on the life of Angelo Soliman. A member of 18th Century Vienna’s elite, the former slave Soliman was a companion of Mozart, the first African Freemason, and a tutor to the royal family. He was also the first person to be stuffed, mounted, and displayed in the imperial Naturalienkabinett.
