Bertha – The Other Love Story

The 17th century novel Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë is one of the greatest love stories in world literature. It tells the tale of the love between the poor governess Jane Eyre and the landlord Edmund Rochester. But were they really the only loving couple at Thornfield Hall? There is another story of love, the one about Edmund and his first wife, Bertha Mason, who in the novel is declared insane and locked up in the attic.
