Belle is Canadian’s playwright Florence Gibson’s lyrical and moving portrait of two emancipated slaves and the upheaval they encounter when they travel north in search of a new life. This four character drama follows Belle and her husband, Bowlyn, as they face life in late 19th century New York, with all of its social unrest and the drama of political action, women’s suffrage and Black Civil Rights. But against this backdrop of life in post-Civil War North – and the activists they meet there – husband and wife continue to grapple with their own history and the voices that continue to call them home to a way of living they thought they were anxious to leave behind forever.
