About the Show

Gardenia Productions presents And You Gave Me Music, a cabaret opera written by and starring Maria Logis, and directed by Tamar Rogoff with Ariel Rogoff-Heitler. The show features original music and lyrics by Alan Turry and Maria Logis.

Meet Maria, a successful corporate executive, who when faced with a diagnosis of cancer does an unusual thing — she starts to sing. Maria ends up in music therapy instead of chemotherapy, realizing that she trusts God more than the doctors. Maria subsequently finds her voice as an artist; in expressing her fear and her love through sound, her life is transformed. Her cancer goes into a “spontaneous partial remission.” The piece varies in musical and emotional tones from stark despair to a rich and exciting encounter with life, from plaintive melodies about the darkness and fear to upbeat, jazzy tunes. In songs and dramatic vignettes, Maria and the ensemble take the audience on a journey not only through Maria’s own anguish and triumph but also to their own inner selves.

The ensemble includes Justin Flynn and Jeremy Manasia, music directors; John Conte, piano; Helen Yee, violin; Justin Flynn, woodwinds; and Glen Fittin, percussion. The Greek Chorus includes Valois Mickens, Sophie Poletti, Marisa Sullivan, and John Wyszniewski.
