About This Show

In American Muscle, John DeLorean invents the first ever Muscle Car in 1964, the Pontiac GTO, and quickly ascends the corporate ranks of General Motors, becoming the youngest ever vice president in GM history. Resigning his position two years later, DeLorean forms his own car company, the DeLorean Motor Company, creating the stylish sports car featured as a time machine in the movie Back To The Future, only to see his dream come unraveled on cocaine conspiracy charges that made notorious headlines in 1982. American Muscle parallels Mr. DeLorean’s saga with the esoteric observations and true-life drag race anecdotes of an auto mechanic, who hotrods a classic 1965 Pontiac GTO. American Muscle is a multi-media show, with vintage images, and a pulsing rock & blues soundtrack.

Writer/performer Richard Thompkins presents the U.S. premiere of American Muscle as part of the 10th annual New York International Fringe Festival.
Christopher McElroen directs.

What People have to say about American Muscle / Richard Thompkins:

“An exciting young talent” – Olympia Dukakis

“Richard’s work is important and clear” – Patsy Rodenburg O.B.E.

“Richard Thompkins is doing something that very few contemporary theater artists even attempt: to dramatize the link between the stuff of dreams and the reality of lives. Ancestry, legacy, devotion and pure Americana are evident in this funny and moving piece, which manages to encompass who we are as Americans while also honoring his individual experience. Richard is working the terrain that dramatists are meant to live in.” – Stephen Belber
