"Would you want to become President of the United States at this time?" With such serious problems rending the national fabric, this question posed by one of the characters in Abe Lincoln: Road to the White House seems to have as much relevance today as it did 148 years ago when Lincoln was first elected. The Hudson Guild Theatre Company (HGTC) presents a new adaptation of Robert Sherwood’s Abe Lincoln in Illinois. The production features a cast of 13 actors from the metropolitan area, five of whom are making their HGTC debut, and a volunteer crew.HGTC’s adaptation focuses on the backroom political deals and maneuvers which led to Lincoln’s rise from a poor man in Illinois to the Presidency of the United States. The adaptation intentionally omits Sherwood’s speculations on Lincoln’s romantic connections, preferring to place attention on the public over the private life of the endlessly explored history of our greatest President. In seeking to draw parallels with our contemporary political arena, it comes up with many provocative comparisons.
