Drinks. Theatre. Salsa. Theatre. Comedy. Theatre. You.
9 Innings of the Night is a fundraiser hosted by Rue at Theatre Centro’s cabaret space. Featuring and supporting the work of Cubicle, Fovea Floods, Timba Asi, and introducing Rue, a new play by August Schulenburg.
A $15 donation gets you a front row seat to watch the work of these four exciting performance companies – and one free drink at our discounted bar! At the door, just say “I’m with (whichever company you’re there to support)” and your donation will be shared between them and the upcoming production of Rue. Then grab a drink, mingle, dance and enjoy the performances!
THE COMPANIES
Cubicle
Dubbed “The Funniest Sketch Group in New York City” at the National Comedy Theater’s 2005 Sketch Competition, Cubicle regularly performs at The People’s Improv Theater, The Improv, and The National Comedy Theatre.
Fovea Floods
The company employs Brechtian theory, cinematic techniques, and sensory bombardment to produce shows that are acutely visual, explosive and literate. Martin Denton called their recent production of Bull Spears “original, challenging and explosively exciting.”
Timba Así
This exciting Cuban dance company was founded to expand awareness of
Timba: an intensely rhythmic and extremely danceable music, halfway between traditional Cuban son and salsa. Timba Así has performed at the Havana Film festival, La Belle Epoque and the Nuyorican Poets Cafe.
Rue at Theater for the New City
This whimsically dark comedy pushes the boundaries of gender, love, and power on an imaginary island in the wild spirit of Shakespeare’s Illyria.
Award-winning playwright August Schulenburg’s work has been called “a pleasing palliative” by the New York Times Online and “Absolutely delicious” by Backstage.
