About This Show

Young Playwrights Inc., the theater comany that Stephen Sondheim began in 1981 celebrates its 20th anniversary this year with the Young Playwrights Festival 2001.

There are three different sections of the festival this year.

Mainstage Performances
Mainstage productions are four plays being performed a night. They perform on Tuesdays through Saturday evenings at 7pm and Saturday and Sunday at 2pm. The exceptions to the schedule are a special evening performance on Saturday October 28 at 7pm with no performances on Sunday, November 11, and Thursday and Friday, November 22 and 23. Among the selected plays are:

Johnny Likaboot Kills His Father!! by Yelena Elkind is about a young writer working out his daddy issues in a creative prose piece. Richard Caliban directs.

Conference Time by Jeb G. Havens is a fast-paced romp about a dysfunctional committee of absurdist characters fruitlessly foundering toward a consensus. Padriac Lillis directs.

Gorgeous Raptors by Lucy Alibar-Harrison is the story of Ugly Kaballah, the only Jewish girl in her small town as she finds power in a rich fantasy life, leading to the birth of the “raptor girls.” Beth F. Mills directs.

Nursery by Julia Jarcho is a theatrical examination of the impact of violence in a piece written before the Columbine High School tragedy. Brett W. Reynolds directs.

WRITE A PLAY! Intergenerational Performance Series
This series brings together young people and seniors to exchange ideas through pre-performance workshops and post-performance discussions. These performances take place on select days at 11:30am or 4:30pm. Call for more information on specifics of this event. This year the peformances include:

From the Mouth of Babes by Eva Anderson is a comedy about three nursery school students who must decide the fate of their teacher.

It’s Hard Work Being a Playa by Jason Newbern is about a high school student named Motown Townsend, a self-possessed professional playa who meets his match when he goes after a beautiful playette.

Tuesday Talks
This event is a series of discussions after Tuesday performances featuring renowned playwrights associated with Young Playwrights Inc. Among those participating are:
