About This Show
Repertorio Espanol will continue its 32nd Season of bringing the best of Latin America, Spanish and Hispanic-American Theater in distinctive, quality productions to a broad audience in New York and across the country. The season will present a full spectrum of old and new plays which will include:
Yo Amo A Shirley (I Love Shirley): Leading Colombian actress Fanny Mikey stars in an adaptation of Will Russell’s one woman tour-de farce Shirley Valentine. June 1-11
La Casa de Bernarda Alba (House of Bernarda Alba): written by Garcia Lorca, directed by Rene Buch. Bernarda Alba is a tyrannical mother who attempts to dominate her five unmarried daughters – all of whom harbor a secret passion for one man. This repressed environment leads to an explosion of passion and despair that leads to tragic consequences. April 28 – June 1.
El Baile (The Dance): a new drama examining the conflicts and isolations of a contemporary Cyban family through the eyes of an old woman living in Cuba. Written and directed by Cuba’s leading playwright Abelardo Estoriano, starring Cuba’s premiere actress Adria Santana. April 29 – May 28.
Teatro Gayumba: The acclaimed theatre troupe returns with three fantastic productions; Don Quijote Y Sancho Panza, Estra Era Una Vez and Cazadores Del Arca Perdida. May 30 – June 10.
Proxima Parada (The Next Stop): written by Carmen Rivera, directed by Michael John Garces. Four strangers meet in a New York City subway and unexpectedly transform each other’s life, gaining hope and dignity. Thru May 13.
Parece Blanca (She Looks White): written and directed by Abelardo Estorino. Set in Cuba during the 1840’s the play deals with slavery, racial distinctions and the abuse the power. A complex tale of a beautiful young woman, who looks white, but is of African origin. When she falls in love with the son of a white Spanish plantation-owner, the story takes an unexpected twist leading to tragic consequences. Thru May 24.
Cronica De Una Muerte Anunciada (Chronicle of a Death Foretold): written by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, conceived and directed by Jorge Ali Triana. This play tells of a spectacular wedding, a savage scandal and a murder to which an entire Latin American town appears to be an accessory. Thru May 25.
La Gringa: written by Carmen Rivera, directed by Rene Buch. A young woman travels from New York City to Puerto Rico to meet her family and discover her roots. Her initial misconceptions are transformed as she learns that being Puerto Rican is a matter of the heart and spirit. Thru May 26.
